Does the Value Guide account for modifications made to a bicycle?
The values reported in the guide reflect the original stock manufacturer's specification and build for each bike. The public-facing Value Guide and product pages do not currently offer the ability to account for upgrades.
Do modifications affect the value of a bike?
While some aftermarket upgrades may add value to used bikes, the value of modifications is subjective and may not be worth the same to all buyers in the cycling community.
What types of upgrades typically add value to a bike?
Certain upgrades that consistently create additional value include:
- Drivetrain upgrades (e.g., from mechanical to electronic, or from Shimano Ultegra to Shimano Dura Ace)
- Wheel upgrades (e.g., from aluminum rim wheels to carbon wheels)
How should I account for upgrades when selling my modified bike privately?
For private sales of modified bikes, it's recommended to:
- Start with the published Private Party Value from the guide
- Add a small percentage of the value of the modifications purchased
Are modifications taken into account during the trade-in process?
Yes, drivetrain and wheel modifications are accounted for during the trade-in process at authorized trade-in partners. The trade-in value may increase or decrease from the published Value Guide range based on these modifications.
How does the trade-in process work for modified bikes?
When trading in a modified bike:
- Bring your bike to an authorized trade-in partner
- Inform them about the modifications to your bike
- The retail employee will select whether upgrades or downgrades have been made
- The trade-in value will be adjusted accordingly
